Focused Time, Just for You

This is a true story that happened to me recently when I needed a change of environment to get some focused work done. It started at a coffee shop and ended at Alonespace….

I have a home office and I live by myself, but I still need to get out of my normal environment and have a change of scenery. It helps me focus, it opens my mind to new ideas and it keeps me from wondering around the house and getting distracted from my work.

I went to one of my local coffee shops that I absolutely love. It can get pretty crowded but usually in the afternoons it’s not so crowded and it’s a great place to sit, work and have a nice smoothie or some really good coffee. I went at about 1:30pm on a Tuesday. There were not a lot of people there at all. I ordered my strawberry smoothie, found a two top table in a spot up against a wall and somewhat away from other tables in case others came in, I was still somewhat in my own little space. There is another two top table right behind the table I was at, but it was empty. I went about my work for about 20 or 30 minutes and a gentleman walks in. He looks around for a place to sit, walks past no less than 6 or 7 empty tables and sits at the table RIGHT BEHIND ME. And when I say this table was right behind me, they are very close to each other.

I was annoyed and thinking, of all these empty spots he had to sit right here… but I let it go, I went about my work and let it go. Until, he bumped into me putting his laptop bag in the chair behind me. That’s how close these tables were, he pulled the chair out to put his bag in it and it bumped into me. He spent about 5 or 10 minutes setting up his whole little work station on this tiny table and it was so disruptive. I was really annoyed now but again, tried to stay focused on my work. But then, he took a phone call, so loud, and he kept getting up and walking around the coffee shop while on the call. He finally gets off the call comes back to his elaborate set up and proceeds to spray his entire table and work items with some heavily scented perfume spray. I have no idea what it was but it was brutal. It was all I could smell and taste and I even could feel it in the air.

That was the final straw for me. I was really needing to get some work done, was craving focused time and the coffee shop completely didn’t do it for me. So what did I do? I came to Alonespace! I put my phone in the faraday box to eliminate any distractions, I put the sound machine on crashing waves, and curled up in the oversized egg chair with my laptop.

The results?

  • Calm and focused mind

  • No distractions and disruptions

  • Completed the tasks on my to-do list

  • Relieved of the stress related to needing to get these things done

It’s amazing what 1 hour of no distractions or disruptions can do. And it doesn’t have to be getting work tasks done. It can be studying time, organizing your meal plan for the week, sorting through important paperwork or documents…. whatever the case may be. Having the ability to have focused time for whatever you need is priceless.

See for yourself, at Alonespace.
